UZH Print Plus - Printer Installation

Requirements

Connecting to the UZH network:

UZH login (short name + password (Active Directory))

Windows

  • Supported: Windows 10/11 (current and supported versions)
  • Login: Use password
    (PIN or other methods do not work on the managed device.)

Installation

  1. Open Run
    • Start menu > enter  «Run» in the search field
      (or: press [Windows] + [R] on the keyboard)
  2. Enter print server
    • \\uppprintsrv.uzh.ch\UZHPrintPlus
    • Confirm with «OK» → Connection is established (login window may take a while to appear).

      Note: For managed clients in the UZH domain, login is automatic.
  3. Log in

    • Enter: UZH\short name + AD password
      (If necessary: More options > Use another account)
      The printer driver will be installed automatically if required.

      Important: Precede the short name with UZH\ (domain).

The printer is then ready for use.

macOS

Supported operating systems: macOS 10.15.7 (Catalina) or newer (with SMBv2 support)

Installation

  1. Install printer driver
    • Canon Support → search for imageRUNNER ADVANCE DX C5840i
    • Select operating system
    • Driver: Download & install UFR II/UFRII LT Printer Driver & Utilities
  2. Open printer dialog
    • System settings > Printers & scanners
    • Button «Add printer, scanner, or fax...»
    • If the Advanced icon is missing from the toolbar (menu):
      • Right-click (control + click) on the toolbar > click «Customize Toolbar...»
      • Drag and drop the Advanced icon onto the toolbar.
    • Select Advanced
  3. Add printer
    • Type: Windows printer via spoolss
    • URL: smb://uppprintsrv.d.uzh.ch/UZHPrintPlus4Mac
    • Name: UZHPrintPlus
    • Driver: Select Canon iR-ADV C5840/5850

Finish by clicking the «Add» button.

Linux

Support is provided locally by IT coordinators.
The Central IT department does not offer Linux support.


1. Install printer driver

  • Canon Support -> Search for «imageRUNNER ADVANCE DX C5840i»
  • Driver: Download and install CQue DEB.

2. Install Samba (-Server) / smb

  • sudo apt-get install samba smbclient 
  • sudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf

Changes in smb.conf:

  • Change workgroup = WORKGROUP to workgroup = UZH
  • Add the following line below: client min protocol = SMB3
  • Add another line: client max protocol = SMB3

3. Add printer

  • Connection: smb://uppprintsrv.uzh.ch/UZHPrintPlus_PS
  • Login: UZH\Shortname + password
  • Name: UZHPrintPlus
  • Model: Canon iR-ADV DX C5840/5850 PS
