Instructions for Installing Servers in NUZ Distribution Rooms
* NUZ: Network University of Zurich
The decentralised installation of servers in NUZ distribution rooms is no longer permitted. For server operations, all UZH units have access to a
Existing installations will be temporarily tolerated, provided that all of the following conditions are met at all times.
Room Temperature
- The room temperature must remain consistently below 30 °C – even in warm weather.
- Prior to installation, the temperature must be well below this value, depending on the server’s heat output.
- No additional ventilation or air conditioning should be required.
Location and Space Requirements
- Servers must not be installed in network racks.
- A separate rack or piece of furniture (e.g. a small table) must be provided.
- This furniture must be procured by the unit itself.
- Access to the network racks must remain unobstructed from the front and rear.
- The room must be sufficiently large for this purpose.
Network and Power Connections
Servers must not be connected directly to the Ethernet switches in the network rack. Use numbered UCC sockets (University Communication Cabling) at the server’s location.
The power supply must also not be sourced from the network racks. Use existing sockets—or have new ones installed.
Use of the Distribution Room
- The distribution room is intended exclusively for IT purposes.
- Storing materials, equipment or IT components – including those that are out of service – is not permitted.
Monitoring and Consequences
- If Central IT detects violations of these rules, or if the room temperature rises above 30 °C, the servers must be removed immediately.
- Changes may occur at any time—for example due to new technical insights, operational requirements, instructions from the safety services (fire protection), or directives from the UZH administration.
